A B O U T U S
Nigel & I have been together for over 25 years eventually marrying in 2009. Nigel is a quietly spoken, lovely gentle man. He is a brilliant carpenter who came to work for a small display company which I co-owned & with his support & hard work we eventually sold that business in 2008. Nigel is still working but Julie has retired.
Nigel is a very keen & a good landscape photographer who was interviewed for the BBC Country File programme back in 2006 in the Peak District on top of Stanage Edge. The Peak District has always been his favourite UK destination. He totally ignores any AA weather warnings & heads up the M1 from our home in Leicester to get to his beloved rocks ready for those early morning dawn breaking shots. He loves the landscape especially covered in snow & ice & he hankers for the heather to bloom in August.
Julie is gregarious & will chat happily to everyone she meets. She is keen on ‘retail therapy’ & gardening, but spends a lot of time trying to train their working Cocker Spaniel ‘Lilly” & hence walks from Tideswell are now well & truly being discovered & enjoyed avoiding the sheep of course!
We had celebrated a lot of Birthday’s & Christmas’ in the Peak District & after much deliberation we purchased The Old Toffee Shop in Tideswell on December 1st 2015.
Internal ‘demolition’ started with vigour early January 2016 & the builders came on board, rebuilding the chimney, ripping out the old fireplace, repointing the exterior walls, replacing the stone window heads & sills, fitting new windows, installing a roof light, new gutters, new stone floors. The place was re-wired & new radiators fitted. Nigel spent every weekend working on the place, building new upstairs walls, laying new floorboards, replacing new skirting’s making & fitting new doors. Tiling the bathroom & kitchen. Decorating, making & fitting the new kitchen, TV unit, bedside drawers, headboards, bathroom furniture, new banisters & new window sills. Julie helped clearing, cleaning & gardening as well as making copious amounts of hot drinks & provided food throughout. I also took responsibility for the majority of the ordering of ‘ingredients’ & selection of the overall decor & design internally. I am now the main point of call for all bookings.
Eventually we would like to live in Tideswell, which feels like home already. But whilst we are still paying off a mortgage, we need to try run the cottage for part of the year as a Self Catering Holiday let, with the premise that we can of course pick & choose our weekends to stop over ourselves & relax.
